Guidelines issued for KSBA Honey Booth sales

The Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) board has stipulated that all honey sold at the Kentucky State Fair Honey Booth must be produced by Kentucky beekeepers and harvested from Kentucky honey bees as per the new “Certified Kentucky Honey” program.


Avoid the word “monofloral.” If you designate your honey as a monofloral, and label it as such, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that you be able to prove that the required pollen analysis indicates at least 46 percent of pollen from the named label source. KSBA recommends designations such as “Wildflower,” “Spring Harvest 2018,” or “Local Jefferson County Honey,” rather than a monofloral. Monofloral honey is a rarity in areas where bees harvest nectar from multiple sources. Most pollen analysis will show the major pollen source around 18 percent maximum.

Container labels must comply with the labeling requirements as described on the FDA websites noted here.

Container labels should be large enough to read information easily. Avoid small “return-address” type labels for displaying the main information, except on the 2 oz. honey bears.

Renew membership at fair

To sell honey at the Honey Booth, the beekeeper must be a member of the KSBA. Membership runs from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, each year. If you are not a member, you can fill out an application when you check in your honey and pay the yearly $15 dues at that time.

Honey check in

Beekeepers may check in their honey to sell at the honey booth beginning Sunday, Aug. 12, from noon until 3 p.m. EDT. Beginning on Monday, Aug. 13 until the fair starts Aug. 16, honey may be checked in from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. EDT. After that, honey may be checked in daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT for the rest of the Fair.

KSBA sells, you get 70 percent

The KSBA will sell your honey at the established state fair prices, and you as the supplier will receive 70 percent of the selling price. Once the fair ends and the remaining unsold inventory is counted, you will be mailed a check for the dollar amount of your honey that was sold.

Honey pick up

All suppliers should check with the manager as the fair winds down to see if any of their honey/hive products were not sold. Producers should pick up their unsold products the day the fair ends.

Avoid mislabeled honey

As always, per the KSBA by-laws, the Honey Booth manager is the sole authority on the honey sold at the booth and the operation of the booth. The manager or an appointee will check in, inventory, and price-label all honey/hive products brought to the fair for sale. Should he/she decide that any honey being sold is adulterated, fermenting, or for any reason not meeting KSBA and FDA guidelines, she/he may pull the honey from the table to be returned to the owner/producer. Any disputes concerning booth operation and/ or honey sales will arbitrated as defined in the KSBA constitution Article X (Standing Committees), Section 1, Subsection B – Kentucky State Fair Honey Booth Sales.
