Beekeeping Workshops to be Held in Clay County

By: Joel Gonia

Joel Gonia of HoneyBear Farms and Jeff Casada, Clay County Extension Agent, will be hosting a series of beekeeping workshops / field days in Clay County to provide an introduction for beginners and assistance to existing beekeepers.

Workshops will be held on October 20, November 10, and December 15 at the EXCEL Building (86 Muddy Gap Rd, Manchester, KY 40962). The workshop will consist of two sessions – a beginner session in the morning and an intermediate session in the afternoon. Topics will include:

  • Beekeeping Basics
  • Conduct Hive Inspections
  • Varroa Mite Treatment
  • Winter Feeding and Hive Moisture
  • Purchasing Bees and Equipment

The beginner session will take place in a classroom environment and will be geared towards people who either do not have bees yet or have just gotten bees. Participants in the beginner session will not need any protective gear or other beekeeping equipment, unless they want to participate in the intermediate session as well.

The intermediate session will be hands-on at a bee farm conveniently located nearby. The intermediate session will be geared towards beekeepers who have existing colonies. Participants in the intermediate session will need to bring their own protective clothing and tools to the workshops.

Lunch is provided and registration is required. Contact Joel Gonia (502-235-0727) or Jeff Casada (606-598-2789) for more information or to sign up for the workshop.
