Spring Teleconference and General Membership Meeting
On May 8th at 7 PM Eastern Time, the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association will hold their spring virtual beekeeping conference.
We will have a special guest speaker for this event, Dr. Mike Hood, entomology professor emeritus of Clemson University in South Carolina. He will be sharing a presentation on the Small Hive Beetle, Aethina tumida.
We will also have a vote on by-laws revision to change membership term from January 1st through December 31st to membership anniversary.
Dr. Michael Hood is a Professor Emeritus of Entomology, Clemson University, South Carolina, where he retired in 2013. He began work at Clemson University in 1988 as a Extension Honey Bee Specialist in the College of Agriculture and as State Apiarist in the Department of Plant Industry in the Division of Regulatory Services. His research for the last 15 years at the university focused primarily on small hive beetle management beginning in 1998 on Wadmalaw Island, Charleston County, South Carolina, where he began development of a small hive beetle trap, later known as the “Hood Beetle Trap.” Mike continues to be a part-time instructor for the South Carolina Master Beekeeper Program. He is the author of a recently-released book titled The Small Hive Beetle, Aethina tumida, which is a complete overview of this honey bee pest. In 2019, Mike published another book titled Bees and Man, which includes over 70 short stories. He is also a retired member of the US Army Reserves serving two years on active duty and serving 23 more years in the active reserves. He retired from service at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2011.
