Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) Fall General Membership Meeting Minutes

KSBA Board Meeting November 13, 2021Attendance: ~30 total (8 officers/directors)

The meeting was held via web teleconferencing and was recorded.

KSBA President Tom Ballinger called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. ET.

President Transition

President Tom Ballinger announced that he is stepping down as President and transferring the position to President-Elect Jessica Mayes. Tom introduced Jessica to the group and Jessica thanked Tom for his service and dedication to KSBA.

Guest Speaker

Dr. Tammy Horn Potter introduced the guest speaker, Danielle Downey. Danielle is the Executive Director of Project Apis m. Danielle gave an informative presentation on her work with Hilo bees bred for Varroa Sensitive Hygienic behavior in the fight against varroa mites.

KSBA Board Elections

Jessica reviewed the slate of KSBA officers and directors for which the group voted using online polling provided by Rick LeMarr, Webmaster. The slate was accepted as proposed. For details on the elected KSBA leadership, go to kybees.org and click on “Current Officers” at the bottom of the page.

Financial Update

Jessica gave a brief update on several financial topics. She shared that KSBA and the State Apiarist donated $500 to Project Apis m., funded Phil Craft’s excellent beginning beekeeping classes, continue to support publication of the monthly Beelines and are nearly complete acquiring a grant for $57,550 to support the Certified Kentucky Honey Program (CKHP). She shared that KSBA is pursuing conversion from 501c5 to 501c3

Certified Kentucky Honey Program

R. Scott Moore shared that the Kentucky Farm Bureau Trade show is set for December 2. Scott sent an email to all CKHP producers to invite them to sell honey at the show with ~10 members interested so far. A second email will go out shortly about an ongoing partnership opportunity with Hive and Barrel Meadery.

New/Open Business

  1. Tom reported that the CKHP posters containing an RFID code are available and anyone interested can contact Scott.
  2. Tammy and Dorothey Morgan notified everyone that Kentucky Queen Bee Breeders Annual Meeting is Saturday, November 20 at 9:00 a.m. with 3 excellent speakers. See the KQBB Facebook page for more details.
