Need Legislative Agent for Beekeepers

The Kentucky State Beekeepers Association is in need of a volunteer to act as Legislative Agent for the association. The agent monitors any actions pending in the Kentucky General Assembly that could impact beekeepers and keeps the KSBA informed. On occasions, the agent may contact legislators to seek legislative action or insure that legislators are aware of how pending matters may affect beekeepers. There are websites and informational tracking tools that assist the agent in awareness of these matters. A message from David Shockey: Several weeks ago, I submitted my resignation to the KSBA Executive Board for family and health related reasons. I had given the Board notice earlier in the spring that I had to slow down and back off my level of commitment. I’m also selling off half of my 30+ beehives and have given notice to the Hardin County Beekeepers that I will be stepping down as their president. Meet 2019 Honey Queen at Kentucky State Fair

KSBA proudly welcomes the 2019 American Honey Queen! Hannah Sjostrom, the 2019 American Honey Queen, will visit the Kentucky State Fair August 16-20, 2019. Hannah is the 21-year-old daughter of Douglas and Kim Sjostrom of Maiden Rock, WI. She is a third generation beekeeper, following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. The Kentucky Certified Honey Program (KCHP) was established by KSBA in an effort to promote the sale of local honey to consumers in Kentucky. We wish to promote the many beekeepers in Kentucky that raise their bees, harvest, process their honey, and sell their honey all within the State of Kentucky. All beekeepers within the State of Kentucky are eligible for certification by making formal application to KSBA and paying the appropriate annual dues. As Certified Honey Producers, beekeepers will have agreed to follow the program guidelines and to apply the certified honey label with a registered trade symbol to the bottles of honey that they sell. Bee Informed Partnership 2018-2019 Colony Loss and Management Survey One of the Bee Informed Partnership’s major focuses is to bring together several disciplines to study ways to keep honey bee colonies healthy. Bee Informed Partnership conducts an annual survey to help all beekeepers and shares the results with the beekeeping community. Last year Kentucky reported 34.7% colony loss with only 112 beekeepers reporting. We need your report! The 2018-2019 Colony Loss and Management Survey is now live and Kentucky State Beekeepers Association encourages beekeepers to participate.  Please take the survey!

KSBA Certified Honey Producers Program Manager Selected The Executive Board of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association received several qualified candidate résumés for the position of Program Manager. After careful review and consideration of all the applications, the KSBA Executive Board has made a selection of Mrs. Sarah Preston for the Project Management position. Sarah will be formally introduced at KSBA’s spring meeting on March 30, 2019 at Hardin County Beekeeper’s Beekeeping School.
