Need Legislative Agent for Beekeepers

The Kentucky State Beekeepers Association is in need of a volunteer to act as Legislative Agent for the association. The agent monitors any actions pending in the Kentucky General Assembly that could impact beekeepers and keeps the KSBA informed. On occasions, the agent may contact legislators to seek legislative action or insure that legislators are aware of how pending matters may affect beekeepers. There are websites and informational tracking tools that assist the agent in awareness of these matters. Reminder: KSBA will help promote bee schools and related events

The Kentucky State Beekeepers Association is happy to include these events on our calendar and help promote them by posting information about the schools on our website and Facebook page, as well as sending announcements to our email list of over 1,200 individuals. 2019 Membership Form is Online

By: Shannon Trimboli The new Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) membership forms for 2019 have been uploaded to the KSBA website’s membership page. KSBA’s annual membership continues to be $15 per family. For the second year, you can join and pay online or download a fillable pdf form that you can print and mail with a check. Online payments are processed through PayPal, but you don’t need a PayPal account. You can use any credit or debit card to pay your membership fee online. By: Tammy Horn Potter Please save the date for Nov. 3rd, Fall KSBA meeting in Shepherdsville. Our honored speaker will be Dr. Jim Tew (Ohio State, ret.), who will be discussing strategies for overwintering bees. Dr. Tew is a beloved beekeeper, speaker and researcher and it is a real treat to have him close out a successful KSBA year. The full schedule will be in the October Beelines. Guidelines issued for KSBA Honey Booth sales

The Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) board has stipulated that all honey sold at the Kentucky State Fair Honey Booth must be produced by Kentucky beekeepers and harvested from Kentucky honey bees as per the new “Certified Kentucky Honey” program. Labeling Avoid the word “monofloral.” If you designate your honey as a monofloral, and label it as such, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that you be able to prove that the required pollen analysis indicates at least 46 percent of pollen from the named label source. KSBA recommends designations such as “Wildflower,” “Spring Harvest 2018,” or “Local Jefferson […]

KSBA Launches Kentucky Certified Honey Program

By: David Shockey The Kentucky Certified Honey Program is an official marketing program of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA). The goals of the program are twofold: first, to promote local honey that is produced by the beekeepers of the KSBA and is a genuine product of the State; second, to connect the local beekeepers with consumers who are looking to purchase local honey. KSBA will be initiating this new program to certify honey producers within the Commonwealth of Kentucky as producers of local honey starting on August 16th at the State Fair. KSBA fall vendors must prove liability insurance

Vendors planning to be part of the fall conference of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) on Nov. 3 must quickly handle some newly discovered late-breaking requirements that potential vendors provide advance proof of their liability insurance within the next couple of weeks. Mike Mabry KSBA vice president, says vendors must have a Certificate of Liability Insurance on file at the Bullitt County Board of Education by July 10. Once again, the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) will be selling honey at the Honey Booth at the State Fair. You must be a current member of KSBA to sell your honey. Memberships can be renewed at the State Fair or online. Prices will remain the same as last year. All honey for sale must be properly labeled. July 2 is Deadline to Submit Entry Forms for State Fair Competition

The deadline for submitting entry forms for the State Fair is July 2. All entries must be received at the State Fair on Sunday, August 12, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. or Monday, August 13, from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The entries must be picked up on Sunday, August 26, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. or Monday, August 27, from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. This year an important rule change will affect recipes for the Honey Culinary competition. Legislators Receive Kentucky Honey

By: George Fowler, KSBA Legislative Agent On March 7, Kentucky legislators participating in the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation’s “Food Check-Out Day” received baskets that included honey donated by members of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA). The baskets showcased the variety of foods produced in Kentucky. For this event, 185 2-oz honey bears were prepared for the baskets. Tags were attached to the jars to show that they were filled with Kentucky honey harvested by members of the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association. What Happened to the KSBA emails?

By: Shannon Trimboli About a week and a half ago KSBA experienced some growing pains that resulted in the temporary suspension of our news emails. Since then, I’ve been impatiently waiting for the opportunity to let everyone know what happened and how we are addressing it. We are currently using MailChimp to send our KSBA news emails. MailChimp has a free service as long as you have less than 2,000 people on your email list and you don’t send more than 12,000 emails in a month. We’ve never come close to those limits – until now. George Fowler of Frankfort’s Capital City Beekeepers (CCB) is the Kentucky State Beekeepers Association (KSBA) legislative agent for the 2018 lawmaking session in progress. One of his first actions will be to work with Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) to include KSBA items in baskets KFB will present legislators on March 7, “Food Check-Out Day” at the Capitol. George graduated from St. Meinrad (Indiana) College in 1969, and served six years in the U.S. Navy, as a nuclear reactor operator and a supply officer.
