What should be my first step?
If you are inexperienced keeping bees we recommend you learn the basics and talk to experienced beekeepers before getting your bees.
- KSBA has live and recorded online classes for beginning beekeeping that cover all the basics that are free to KSBA members.
- Attend one of the in-person or virtual bee schools. The KSBA calendar of events has several bee schools, local association meetings, workshops, and conferences throughout the year.
- Read about Honey Bees and beekeeping from a list of recommended books.
How can I find assistance with my bees?
Join a local bee club. Our directory of local beekeeper associations may have a club near you.
If you don’t have a local bee club near you, contact a local county extension office where you live.
You may find a beekeeper in our Buy Local products and services listing who may be willing to mentor you hands on their beehives.
Are there any financial programs to help me get started?
Due to undetermined market forces and budgets from year to year KSBA recommends you start by looking at past programs Verify they are currently accepting applications and the requirements to qualify.
The Kentucky State Apiarist website may also have grants available from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.
Can I get notified of new programs and information that becomes available?
Yes! Join KSBA and subscribe to Recent News and Announcements and also the monthly BeeLines Newsletter.
